Blessed Eid al-Shukr!
On Eid al-Shukr, We thank God for the nourishment he has provided us and also thank God for the strength to act against injustice with our hands, our voices, and through prayer.
As a community, I suggest we work with Native Americans to ban racist Sports Mascots. Through grass roots activism, Native American groups were able to persuade the NCAA to ban the use of racist mascots and team names. Their activism provides an admonishment to us and a good example.
The Danish Cartoons bothered us, so much so, that people in the community were ready to threaten free speech to protect the Prophet (s). But many of us never bothered about these mascots which constitute a greater expression of racism than some newspaper in Denmark has ever produced. Through long-term educational programs at all school levels and on the ground activism, Native American groups were able to persuade the NCAA to ban racist mascots. There is still a long way to go on this issue. They could use a hand and we could learn something about how to make change without destroying the freedoms we've got.
See links to web pages of groups working on the issue.

Thanks for the blessing, and the same to you and everyone else!

I am off to a thanksgiving
I am off to a thanksgiving dinner day at a friends to lie around, eat, and watch conan, nacho libre, starship troopers, etc….. Worry not, relaxation is scheduled! (^:
But thanks for the reminder! God give you ease and beauty in all things you do. Amin.

There are only two lawful holidays in Islam, Thanksgiving is not one of them, in 1498, the Pope declared a “Day of Thanksgiving” to commemorate the victory of the Catholic Monarchs against the last Muslim principality in Spain (Granada).
You are promoting bidah, hehehehehe!

Atom and his Package have a song called something like “If you’re the owner of the Washington Redskins, You’re a Cocl”. He also has a song called “The Palestineans Aren’t Exactly the Rebel Alliance”.

Hood, I just read your blog on this.
Now, get this Hood (and I know who you are! (^:). Be a Maliki for just a minute, just a minute. It is “a national holiday” with all the attendant baggage just as you said. Done. Legal discussion over.
I will also add that thanksgiving can be nourishing to the soul if your family does not fight through the whole thing. We always have a strays’ thanksgiving so all those without families to go to hang together, everyone brings a dish, we eat and laugh and watch Conan the Barbarian and Tron. Very dangerous stuff. I see my iman slipping through my fingers.
Life is hard enough, Hood. Why make things worse when you have the choice?

On the subjects, two posts:
The Thankfulness of Forgiving:

And a Native American inspired poem written:

By the way, November is Native American Heritage Month.

Well I don't know if I can
Well I don’t know if I can argue
against Tron ;)
The whole point of my post was
more than the legal discussion.
There is def. the consideration
for our own 100% sanctioned Eid
prayers as well.
Why would we need another holiday
to gather on and chill if there
wasn’t something wrong with the way
the community perceived Eid, themselves,
and others?
Be a Sufi for a moment and look
deeper into the discussion (^:)
Wannabeing a sufi for a
Wannabeing a sufi for a moment suggests that more getting together and taking care of each other is more good. I wrote a post on food and blessings a while back. Kinda sweet, but you haven't seen my sweet side yet. You should take a look
In no way does it denigrate our religous holidays to take part in a national holiday. Hey and why the heck would we have prayers on Thanksgiving!? It is a day to sleep in late (after fajr, of course) not get up early and go out to pray in congregation! Egads and Lord Almighty! (^:
I am glad you see the wisdom of Tron. The MCP should be your greatest fear, not enjoying a meal with friends and family on a nationwide day off.
I also like how your smiley face has a little skull cap on it.  ÂÂ
A strays' Thanksgiving! I
A strays’ Thanksgiving! I think that’s what we had. We didn’t want to travel, and various friends of ours either weren’t traveling or wanted to see us and the rest of their community after their respective families’ dinners. We all had (almost) too much fun. It was anarchy and chaos, it was beautiful.
