Christian protests likely to halt filming of Golden Compass sequels

Sadly, it seems that protests against the anti-Church sentiments of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy has most likely led to the abandonment of the filming of the trilogy. Calls to boycott the first film, The Golden Compass, led to disappointing box office receipts in the US (although it did quite well in the rest of the world).

What a pity, Pullman’s books are wonderful. Much more thought-provoking than any other children’s fiction out there. Obviously, Muslims protesting cartoons of Muhammad are not the only religiously-inspired barriers to freedom of speech in modern media.

While it was too preachy

While it was too preachy for me to call it great children’s literature, I’m also wondering why a largely American response should dictate the course of the trilogy’s existence.

Christian protests will do

Christian protests will do little to prevent the major studios from making a trilogy that is critical of organized religion in general.

To me, Superman’s story invokes the story of Christ in the Gospels. Superman comes from another planet, his father has left him to walk among us, to assist us. He is one of us, and he is not at the same time.

In Bollywood, “Krishna as Superhero” is a common motif.

Superman was conceived of

Superman was conceived of and written by two Jewish men who desired to reflect their Jewish religion in the character. The names of the characters such as Ja-el and K-el are derivatives of Hebrew names. Superman being not Jesus or a Christian motif but rather a Jewish one. Someone to save the Jews, a super Jew.

On the other hand, there is

On the other hand, there is nothing stopping a Jewish writer or filmmaker from drawing upon Chrsitian motifs. After all...Steven Spielberg...E.T....

So, did they develop

So, did they develop kryptonite because the thought of a superhero done in by shrimp, or a cheeseburger seemed a little wimpy?

I really don’t know that

I really don’t know that piece of the story, LOLOL but its a funny gagline.

Superheroes are lonely,

Superheroes are lonely, portrayed and misunderstood and isolated from the mainstream.

In the movie “Hancock” with Will Smith, “superheroes” are compared to the “gods.”

Superheroes exist. They

Superheroes exist. They just aren’t the kind that can look through your clothes with xray vision. Superheroes are Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, Mother Theresa, and the survivors of torture and genocide.
