It seems in the realm of Indian popular culture and cultural production, Muslims have always excelled in this arena.

Cheb-i-Sabbah's album Shri Durga (Hindu music) has Muslim performers on it.  Zakir Hussain and Ustad Sultan Khan are both from India & play in lots of experimental projects.  Good musicians too.

I've read of concerts in a garden in Iran where Sufis would play Hindu music and Hindu musicians would play Sufi music.
