The latest issue of PARABOLA on the theme of "Thinking" features an article on "ijtihad" by our own G. Willow Wilson. From the article:
It was hot, and I had decided to forgo social delicacy.
“Saint Aisha didn’t have pins,†I said to my husband as I rifled through the drawer reserved for my headscarves. “Nowhere in the Qur’an are pins mentioned. Nowhere in the Hadith are pins mentioned. I’m sick of pins.†A scarf woven in shades of rose caught my eye; I pulled it out. It had been a gift from my brother-in-law.
My husband leaned in the doorway with his arms crossed, looking philosophical.
“No, Saint Aisha didn’t have pins, and it’s silly to make them so important,†he said. “But are you willing to explain that to everyone who tells you you’re wearing your scarf the wrong way?â€Â
